Volunteer Tech Tutor For Older Adults

Student Volunteer Opportunity- AgeWell at the JCC

AgeWell at the Jewish Community Center in Squirrel Hill is seeking university students to serve as volunteer “tech tutors”. Older adults are facing a health and a social isolation crisis. Even before the onset of Covid, studies showed that 25% of older adults are isolated and 33% report extreme loneliness – a risk factor for health decline and even premature death.  Mandated closures and lack of readily accessible online services are exacerbated isolation and uneven access to health assessment, connections, and physical/ mental wellness. Recognizing that there is no quick return to pre-pandemic ‘normal’ in senior services, the stakes have never been higher. AgeWell at the JCC (the accredited senior center within the community center), is expanding their online and in person programming, surrounding basic technology literacy, to address this issue. Equipment (laptops, tablets, etc.) has been ordered to create a portable tech lab, and series of computer literacy courses are being developed, with the help of community partners. Students who serve as tech tutors would be using these materials to instruct seniors, in person and online, 1-4 hours weekly over the Fall 2023 semester. By volunteering for this program, students will aid in closing the digital divide, and support seniors’ use of technology to address their health and social needs.

Who: University Students in the Pittsburgh area

What: Earn service hours for your major by serving as tech tutors for senior citizens

Where: At the Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh

When: 1-4 hours weekly, beginning early October 2023- mid December 2023

Why: To increase senior center member’s knowledge surrounding technology basics, which will hopefully result in improved social connectedness and overall health.

Prerequisites:

·       Students do not have to be tech experts, but basic understanding of different platforms and devices is important.

·       Interest in working with older adults 60+

·       *For any in-person activities:

o   Act 33 (Child Abuse History Clearance)

o   Act 34 (Criminal Record Check)

o   Act 114 (FBI Fingerprint Criminal Background Check, only needed if you have lived in PA less than 5 years)

o   Mandated Reporter training

*Human Resource Department at the JCC can assist students in completing these forms

If you are interested in volunteering or learning more, please contact Maddie Barnes, Director of Technology and Evidence-Based Programming at AgeWell at the JCC, at 412-697-1186 or mbarnes@jccpgh.org
